Thermal Processing of Jupiter-family Comets during Their Chaotic Orbital Evolution

چکیده

Evidence for cometary activity beyond Jupiter and Saturn's orbits -- such as that observed Centaurs long period comets suggests the thermal processing of comet nuclei starts before they enter inner Solar System, where are typically monitored. Such observations raise questions to depth unprocessed material, whether JFCs can be representative any primitive material. Here we model coupled dynamical evolution Family Comets (JFCs), from moment leave their outer System reservoirs until ejection into interstellar space. We apply a sample simulated obtained simulations (arXiv:1706.07447) successfully reproduce orbital distribution JFCs. show due stochastic nature trajectories toward solar system, all undergo multiple heating episodes resulting in significant modifications initial volatile contents. A statistical analysis constrains extent processing. suggest primordial condensed hypervolatile ices should entirely lost layers contribute today. Our results demonstrate understanding (and thus, heating) history is essential when putting broader context.

Coma Morphology of Jupiter Family Comets

We present a general review of cometary coma morphology, with specific reference to how it used in studies of Jupiter family comets. We introduce the most common features that are seen in gas and dust observations, and summarize of how they are used to infer the properties of the nucleus and coma. We also expand the discussion to cover other topics relating to morphology, including the general ...

The Size-Frequency Distribution of Dormant Jupiter Family Comets

We estimate the total number and the slope of the size frequency distribution (SFD) of dormant Jupiter Family Comets (JFCs) by fitting a one-parameter model to the known population. We first select 61 Near Earth Objects (NEOs) that are likely to be dormant JFCs because their orbits are dynamically coupled to Jupiter (Bottke et al. 2002). Then, from the numerical simulations of Levison and Dunca...

Nuclear Magnitudes and the Size Distribution of Jupiter Family Comets

We present a new catalog of absolute nuclear magnitudes of Jupiter family (JF) comets, which is an updated version of our previous catalog (Tancredi et al. 2000). The full version of the catalog can be accessed on line at http://www.fisica.edu.uy/∼gonzalo/catalog. From the new catalog we find a linear cumulative luminosity function (CLF) of slope 0.54 ± 0.03 for JF comets with q < ∼ 2.5 AU. By ...

Disk as the source of the Jupiter Family comets

The short period Jupiter family comets (JFCs) are thought to originate in the Kuiper Belt; specifically a dynamical subclass of the Kuiper Belt known as the 'scattered disk' is argued to be the dominant source of JFCs. However, the best estimates from observational surveys indicate that this source falls short by about three orders of magnitude the estimates obtained from theoretical models of ...

The population, magnitudes, and sizes of Jupiter family comets

We analyze the sample of measured nuclear magnitudes of the observed Jupiter family (JF) comets (taken as those with orbital periods P < 20 years and Tisserand parameters T > 2). We find a tendency of the measured nuclear magnitudes to be fainter as JF comets are observed with CCD detectors attached to mediumand large-size telescopes (e.g. Spacewatch Telescope). However, a few JF comets observe...
